Burlingame was founded in the late nineteenth century by William Ralston, whose enormous wealth had roots in the California gold rush. At first Burlingame was the locale of grand estates on vast acreage, centered around the new Burlingame Country Club, the first country club in California. The first residents of Burlingame were the movers and shakers of their time, the elite of San Francisco society, the Crockers, Sharons, Popes and others of high standing. There were Polo, Fox hunting, and other activities for the landed Gentry of San Francisco’s’ gilded era. In 1894, the landmark, mission style train depot was built at the foot of Burlingame Ave., and the town of Burlingame boomed. The first planned suburb of San Francisco, the vision and development of Burlingame was inspired by the City Beautiful movement championed by Frederick Olmsteadt, architect for Central Park, and John Mc Laren, architect of Golden Gate Park. Tracks were laid for street cars. All streets were planted with thousands of trees. Numerous parks, squares, and circles were created to provide serenity and open space. Today this magnificent depot still serves commuter trains that run between San Jose and San Francisco.
Quaint commercial buildings of great character were built along Burlingame Avenue and its’ side streets, creating a downtown that is today one of the premier destinations on the Peninsula for dining shopping, strolling and sightseeing.
